Diagram of the surgical repair of the most common form (type c) the EA/TEF spectrum. The lower end of the esophagus is detached and the hole in to the trachea repaired. The two ends of the esophagus are opened and fine sutures used to bring the two ends together as shown. When there is a moderate gap between the two esophageal ends, these sutures are used to pull the ends together. If the sutures are correctly placed, they will withstand a considerable amount of tension. If this technique will not suffice, then several days of either internal or external traction as will be described, may be necessary.
